Why are Catholics obsessed with virgins?

That’s quite a generalisation!  I’m certain that many Catholics are different, so so some might have different reasons to others, while many others probably aren’t obsessed with virgins at all!  I can only really guess at an answer to this question.

There are two main reasons that I can think of which might result in Catholics being ‘obsessed’ with virgins.  Firstly, an underlying assumption that all sexual activity is sinful, and secondly, a high regard for Mary, Jesus’ mother.

Over the last two thousand years, many people have had the idea that all sexual activity is sinful.  Some Christians have taken this idea on board, and so that might be why some people think that virgins are somehow better Christians.  This idea that all sex is sinful has no biblical basis, in fact, the Bible encourages married couples to have sex (see 1 Corinthians 7:2-5).

A second reason that Catholics might be ‘obsessed’ with virgins is because they consider Mary, Jesus’ mother, to be very important.  Mary did play an important role as being Jesus’ mother, however, it is wrong to worship her.  Only Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins.  I suspect that some people might worship Mary, then think that because she was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus that somehow virgins are more important or better than other people.  If this is the case then it might help explain why some Catholics are ‘obsessed’ with virgins.

In the end, Christians shouldn’t be obsessed with virgins.  Our focus should be on Jesus, the Son of God, who came to Earth so that we could have eternal life.
