Watchmen vs The Bible

Some interesting similarities exist between 'Watchmen' & 'The Bible'.

Thanks to Myspace, I went and saw Watchmen (that’s right, there’s no ‘The’) for free last night. Two warnings firstly about the movie:

1) It’s very long, and kind of boring (almost 3 hours)
2) The violence is very graphic, there is some fairly full on sex scenes, and there is some full frontal male nudity.

Apart from that, the actual story is interesting, and has some parallels to the Bible. I can’t give away what happens, but here’s a few notes I took on the similarities and differences between ‘Watchmen’ & ‘The Bible’.

SIMILARITIES:

According to Watchmen, humans have a ‘savage nature’.
According to The Bible, humans were created good, but now have a corrupted, sinful nature.

Watchmen say the world is full of evil.
The Bible says the world is full of evil.

The Watchmen movie contains a lot of violence.
The Bible contains a lot of violence.

Watchmen’s final hope for humanity involves an outrageous sacrifice for the ultimate good of humanity.
The Bible’s final hope for humanity involves an outrageous sacrifice, for the ultimate good of humanity.

DIFFERENCES:

In Watchmen, God doesn’t exist.
In The Bible, God is supreme.

In Watchmen, to save the world, millions have to die and 1 innocent man takes the blame,
In the Bible, to save the world, 1 innocent man must die, and take the blame for millions.

Watchmen’s final hope for a new world order relies on the hope that all people will finally be good to each other.
The Bible realises this just isn’t going to happen, and instead God plans to create a new heaven and new Earth, where all evil, injustice and sin will be removed forever.

Watchmen leaves you very little hope for the future.
The Bible leaves you with a certain hope for the future.
