Just go with it Review

The truth is" " this movie about lies is not great

What’s the movie about?

Just go with it is like one of those TV sitcoms where someone tells a lie at the very beginning of the episode” and spends the rest of the time doing completely silly things to cover up for their lie rather than just simply coming out and telling the truth.

Adam Sandler plays the part of a plastic surgeon. He has a thing for younger women and in order to win over a particular girl he tells her that he is married but is getting divorced. He then enlists the help of the assistant at his surgery to pretend to be his wife and her kids pretend to be his kids and his best friend pretends to be a German sheep trader and they all go to Hawaii together because a kid lied about how his father doesn’t love him. Are you confused yet?

Just go with it has plenty of moments for laughs but the amount of lies in the movie ends up becoming ridiculous. It becomes simply unbelievable and so you begin to lose interest in the movie.

Lies lies lies

The writer of the Psalms talks about people who “love evil rather than good falsehood rather than speaking the truth” (Ps 52:3).

You only have to live through one election campaign to understand that the world is full of lies. But the truth is we’re all pretty good at lying.

I think we lie for lots of reasons but one of the biggest is that we want people to like us. We tell them things that are ‘half-truths’ or ‘exaggerations’ to enhance their opinion of us. Let’s be honest and call these lies. I know from experience and maybe you do too that sometimes these lies turn out like Just go with it a huge mess that is hard to get out of.

The Bible says that lying is not just a ‘small sin’. It’s not something to be taken lightly. In 1 Timothy 1:9-11 lying is in a list of sins including murder & sexual immorality.

Lying in movies and sitcoms can seem funny at the time but in our real lives as we serve God lying is not an option for Christians. That includes big lies and small.

The final word

I certainly wouldn’t recommend spending the money to see this movie on the big screen. It’s more of a DVD kind of thing. It’s way too long (almost 2 hours) and tries too hard to be funny without hitting the mark a lot of the time.

However if you do watch it keep track of what happens to the people who lie in this movie. The lies cause all sorts of hurt pain ” and trouble. Let it be a reminder to us to always speak the truth in love.
