Fair Game Review

A CIA movie that asks the question - what is truth?

Fair game is a movie about truth.

It is based on two books that were written by Joseph Wilson and his wife Valerie Plame Wilson.

Back when America invaded Iraq with ‘shock and awe’” one of the main reasons given for going to war was that Iraq had ‘weapons of mass destruction’.

Both Joseph Wilson (a former government diplomat) and Valerie (a CIA agent) were involved in the search for evidence of the weapons. Their conclusion was that there were no weapons of mass destruction and that the government was either making it up or listening only to one side of the argument.

They tried to tell the Government and then the public what they believed but were opposed at every turn. The CIA fired Valerie (and released her real identity to the public) and the government discredited the Wilsons in the press. The stress on the Wilsons eventually took a heavy toll.

If we are to believe the Wilsons the CIA & US Government were involved in a major conspiracy to invade a country that didn’t pose any real threat to America at all. However if we are to believe the US Government the Wilsons were self-promoting liars who didn’t know what they were talking about.

This battle for the truth led to all sorts of lies. On top of that the movie itself is based on books by the Wilsons so one can rightly ask ‘how do we even know if this is a true account of what happened?’

Jesus & the battle for truth

When it comes to Christianity & who Jesus is there is another battle for truth going on.

For example - you might believe Jesus is the only way to God. However another person believes that praying to Allah and serving him is the only way to God. Yet another says there is no God. Which one is true?

Many people will say “it is ok that you all believe these different truths. There is no ‘absolute truth’ and all of these things depend on who you are where you live what your family believes etc.” (this is known as ‘relative truth’).

However just like in this movie sometimes things are either true or not true. You cannot say ‘Iraq had weapons of mass destruction’ and also then say ‘Iraq had NO weapons of mass destruction’. The claims contradict each other.

It is the same when we approach Jesus. He said very clearly “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me”.

Either Jesus was 100% right or 100% wrong. Christians believe that he backed up his claim with action. He proved his truthfulness through miracles that only God could do and he rose from the dead ” ultimately showing he really was who he said.

What do you think? Is truth ‘relative’? Can we really be sure that what we believe is the truth?
