Apple vs God

They both have a powerful list of features, but there can only be one winner.

There's lots of hype at the moment surrounding the release of the new iPhone and other Apple products. There's even a guy who set up a camp chair outside the Apple store in Sydney three months ahead of the release of the iPhone X!

As I listened to Apple's official announcement it got me wondering whether Apple has taken the place of God in our modern world.

The church of Apple

The church of Apple is their retail stores, or as they now like to call them ‘town squares.’ They have redesigned their stores so that they are not just places you go to buy products, but you also go to learn and experience community.

Here's what the church of Apple offers:

  • Instead of Bible study... Apple invites leaders from the community to come in and teach people on topics like photography and app development.
  • Instead of a Sunday service... Apple invites people to gather together and chat at their stores. Plus they have their keynote events where the whole audience comes and listens to 'preachers' like CEO Tim Cook.
  • Instead of the Bible... you can get answers to your biggest questions from Siri.
  • Instead of prayer... you can connect to Apple from anywhere - even on a surfboard - with your Apple watch.
  • Instead of God's Spirit in our hearts...  Apple have sent their iPhones into our pockets. Wherever we go, whatever we're doing, the presence of Apple is with us.

Apple vs God

With God pushed out of the public sphere, Apple has attempted to fill the void. But the truth is, Apple falls a long way short of the Lord of the universe.

  • Apple has been around just over 40 years... but God is eternal. As much as it seems like Apple is shaping our world and creating the future, don't forget that God brought the universe into being and is in control of everything that has ever happened, from the distant past to the eternal future.
  • iPhones break and need to be upgraded...  but God is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
  • Apple wants to enhance our lives and set us free... but only God can deal with the deepest problem of our hearts – our sinful nature that rebels against God. Only through Christ can we find forgiveness and be truly free (1 Peter 3:18).

And there is one more thing…

God is always better

As impressive as Apple’s latest technology may be, God will always better. As much as humans ignore God or try to push him out of the way, that doesn’t change the fact that he is always there. What’s more, not only is he always there, he is always better.

  • He has given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3),
  • In Christ we have every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3)
  • His Word thoroughly equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16).
  • We can have a personal relationship with God through 24/7 access to him in prayer (Heb 10:22)
  • Through the death and resurrection of Jesus we can be forgiven all our sin and have eternal life in heaven (1 Peter 1:3).
  • We also get a whole new family as we are adopted into God’s kingdom! (Matt 19:29)

Now that is a list of features we should get excited about! So don’t be fooled into thinking Apple is replacing God. As impressive as their new iPhones may be, God is always better.
