There’s a Bible verse that states that the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man (1 Corinthians 1:25). Now I don’t know about you, but that seems to me like even God’s foolishness is not really a joke but is truly wisdom. How awesome is that! That should give us great comfort to know that God will always know the best thing for us and the wisest way to help us. It also means that whatever he asks us to do, as silly or illogical as we might think it sounds, we have to trust in him and do what he asks. I’ll share some personal examples of how God asked me to do things that I thought were unnecessary and even unwise but it was the voice of God directing my life.
I love you
I used to work as a teacher and I had just started my job so I spent a lot of late nights at work. On one of those late nights I was walking toward my car in the car park and I heard some music playing and laughter soaring high. As I passed two boys sitting in the back of a van singing to music, I heard the voice of God tell me to tell the young men that he loved them.
The voice of God wasn’t a loud voice it was a still quiet voice inside my spirit. I wasn’t thinking about talking to anyone that night. I was thinking about going home, eating some dinner and getting some rest. Plus it was dark outside and I was trying to be safe by not talking to strangers. So I headed to my car and put my bags inside and almost sat down in the driver’s seat when I stopped myself. The real issue wasn’t that I was hungry or tired it was that I didn’t want to look like fool in front of strangers.
I had several thoughts to myself like, “What if they laugh at me or look at me strange?” I also thought,“ What if they just ignore me?” I then started to doubt that I even heard God’s voice. But I couldn’t shake it, it was his voice and I knew it. I had known it since I was five years old and twenty plus years later it was the same still small voice. So I turned around and walked back towards the young men. I stood by their truck and wondered what to say. Then I noticed that we had the same portable radio. I said hello to them and told them that I liked their radio and that I had one as well. They gave me a nod and said, “ Thanks.” Then I said something like this, “I was walking to my car and I felt like God wants you to know that he loves you and he wants you to have a good night.” They both looked at me and said, “Okay.” I then told them goodbye and headed to my car. As I drove off I thought to myself what will they think of me. They’ll think that I’m a crazy lady who hears voices. But when I listened to my heart and spirit it was reassuring that I did the right thing and everything was okay.
Resign
Now I want to share one of the most difficult things that God has asked me to do. To many people it was one of the most foolish things I have ever done, but to God it was what he wanted. After I graduated college, it took me a while to get a job. A friend of mine hired me and I started working soon after. I was at my job for about four months when I had a strange conversation with a co-worker. She told me that she had a message from God and that I shouldn’t get comfortable because I wasn’t going to be there for a long time.
I assumed that meant I was leaving after about 5 years because people usually stay there until they retire. The next month while I was at my desk God asked me to resign. It was a tough pill to swallow because I just got the job, had student loans to pay and needed money to pay my bills. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it. It took me one week to resign, but I did it.
In both of these examples I am sure I looked like a clown or a weirdo to some on-lookers. Am I glad I made the choice to risk my reputation for God? Yes, I am. The only reputation I need and we all need is follower of Christ. So the next time God asks you to do something “foolish” know that it is the wisest thing you could ever do.
