What’s it like being a Christian teen?

We asked six teens about their experience of following Jesus. This is what they said.

To help celebrate the launch of Fervr's new book, Unshakable: Following Jesus in your teens and beyond, we asked six Fervr readers what it's like to follow Jesus where they live. Their answers below – from countries around the world – show the challenges they face, and the hope they hold onto.

"It's hard but worth it" — Ariana (13), USA

In many ways it is a struggle. And it is and can be very complicated. When God first asked you if you wanted to be His child, he didn't say it would be easy. He didn't tell you that you wouldn't have hard times, that you wouldn't fall to temptation. He said that if you followed Him, you would go to Heaven. For teen Christians, it is easy to go for what the world wants. The world says that you are supposed to like boys or girls, that you are supposed to envy other people around, that you have to look good and be perfect to be accepted into society. The thing is, you don't. That makeup isn't you, it's the world. Those tight shirts aren't you, they are the world. God wants us to have a good relationship with Him, but it's hard. We will struggle, we won't always be looking towards God in hard times; even in good times. What is it like being a Christian teen? It's hard but worth it.

"It's the greatest thing" – Israel (18), Nigeria

The word of God makes it clear that although it may be difficult following Jesus, we can find rest in Him alone (Matthew 11: 28). Personally, I  have had serious challenges with my health and moral life but have found that as a Christian, I have gradually been able to overcome them.  Being a Christian is hard, but Jesus said that his disciples have to carry a cross (Luke 14:27), and we all know that there are crosses in life whether you are a Christian or not. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 that his yoke is "easy and His burden light". I believe God can always make every difficulty we face easier, as that's been my personal testimony. For that reason, it's the greatest thing as a teen to be a Christain.

"I have struggled" – Mylee (15), USA

As I’ve gotten to know more and more about God and the Bible, my eyes have been opened up to see the works and beauty of this brilliant creator, savior, father and friend. Personally, I have struggled with finding my identity and other typical difficulties with sports, school and peers, but what I have realized is that finding my worth and strength through God and trusting in Him has been the absolute best thing to do. Being a disciple of Christ isn’t a simple stroll down the sidewalk. There are twists and turns and numerous bumps in road, yet no matter the circumstance, it is the best feeling to know that the God of the universe is on our side.

"I am proud to be a Christian!" – Reggie (18), Philippines

Being a Christian is not so easy! Remember, the Christian journey is in the narrow path. A path that's full of battles, trials, circumstances, hindrances and temptations. But thank God! Because this path is the God-given road, The road to His Kingdom, to Heaven. Being a Christian is not so easy. My flesh speaks, "you can't do what Jesus says", but my spirit does what Jesus did. For the scriptures says
in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." It's hard! But in the end, it is so worth it! I am proud to be a Christian! Glory to Jesus!

"I love going to church" – Hannah (13), Canada

Being a Christian teen is a huge part of me. Christianity demands a bit of time and patience from you, but I honestly think it’s worth it. Making it to Heaven is my biggest goal. Jesus is perfect and becoming even close to that is sometimes challenging but if you have a supportive community, it gets easier. I love going to church and discussing the sermon with my friends. Christianity is great because there are so many different ways you can express yourself. I love singing/writing, so Christian music is my go-to music. As long as you know God loves you, being a Christian teen and making it to Heaven is the best goal you can achieve.

"The fight may be hard, but the promise is even better" — Veronica (19), USA

Being a Christian teen is not as easy as it seems. Many times it feels like a fight. A fight to do what friends do or to behave like a follower of Christ. However, I can wholeheartedly say that it is worth it. It is worth it to not go to the party or to not hang out with certain people. It is worth it to not (fill in the blank) Why? Because of who God is. He is loving, kind, and generous. He does not command just for the sake of commanding. On the other hand, He has the best plan. Specifically, plans of good and not of evil. Plans that give a good hope and future. The fight may be hard, but the promise is even better.
