Bargain shopping won’t make you happy!

Why you shouldn't spend all your cash at post-Christmas sales

Well, we've just spent Christmas day giving and receiving all sorts of things to each other. We've spent the last month buying lots of new clothes, electronics, music and more for all our friends and family.

So, what could we possibly do after Christmas now that we have all this new gear?

It seems like most people are pretty keen to go out to the post-Christmas sales and buy even more stuff!

The sales can be a great way to grab a bargain, but they can also be a great time to get ripped off. A friend of mine who works at a major retail store, said that the day after Christmas, they put most of their products UP by about $100 or more! His explanation was that people are in a frenzy & they assume everything is on sale, but often the prices are actually higher. People think they're getting a bargain, but in reality they are sometimes just getting a raw deal.

Perhaps it's time for us all to stop thinking that buying more and more things will make us happier. It just doesn't work.

Thousands of years ago, these words were written:

"Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income." (Ecclesiastes 5:10)

So if no amount of money, or things is going to make us happy, what will?

Jesus makes it pretty clear what will really satisfy us. In fact he says for those who understand, they will sell everything they own, including everything they got at Christmas and in the sales, just to get a hold of what Jesus offers! What is it? It's the kingdom of heaven. What is that? It is the offer of living in peace with God, under his care and rule.

Jesus says "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field."

How do you make sure you are in the kingdom of heaven - that you are at peace with God? Well, the answer is again found in Jesus' words:

"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life." (John 5:24)

So instead of spending money to find temporary satisfaction, spend time with Jesus who offers eternal satisfaction.
