Is being a Christian about being good?

Is being a Christian about being good?

Asked by Olie

Hello,
My name is Olie, I was wondering if you confirm for my mother, what it is
to be a Christian, and why it is not about being a good person. Maybe she
will listen to you guys…
Thanks,
In Christ,
Olie

Hi Olie,

Christianity, as the name suggests, is about a person: Christ (a title for Jesus).  Jesus walked around on the Earth about 2000 years ago and both did and taught some amazing things.  He was killed but three days later he rose again.  Jesus claimed that he would do this and that he was the Son of God.  A Christian is a person who believes Jesus’ claim, and who tries to live with Jesus as their ruler and saviour.  Ruler: because Jesus has God’s authority to rule over the earth and all people.  Saviour: because Jesus saves us from the punishment we deserve because we all reject and disobey God.

Christians try to be good people because that is what God wants us to be.  But the most important thing that God wants is for us to relate to him properly.  God made us, and his son Jesus died for us.  He did this so that we could be forgiven and be friends with him, rather than being his enemies, which is how we naturally are because we ignore, reject and disobey him.  Trying to be a good person while ignoring or rejecting God isn’t good at all.  You might look good to others, but God will see right through that.  God wants us to put him at the centre of our lives.

A good Bible verse that shows this is in John 6:28-29.  Jesus was asked “What must we do to do the works God requires?” He answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
