We found love in a hopeless place

What can we learn from Rihanna's latest hit?

We found love

Rihanna’s latest hit 'We found love' is her first offering from her upcoming album 'Talk That Talk'. The lyrics largely revolve around Rihanna chanting ‘We found love in a hopeless place.” I am not exactly sure what Rihanna means by this (the rest of the lyrics don’t really help) but I know that whatever Rihanna has found, Christians have found something much more valuable.

In many ways, a Christian is someone who was “in a hopeless place” until love stepped in.

Check out Romans 5:6-10:

"You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"

It doesn’t get much more hopeless than being powerless, ungodly, a sinner and an enemy of the living God. Yet it was when we were in that hopeless place that we found love. Or to be precise, love found us.

This is love

For it was when we were still powerless, ungodly, sinful and God’s enemies that God sent the Lord Jesus Christ to die for us. This is love.

And this is a powerful love:

This love justifies us (God declares us to be OK with him).

This love reconciles us (restores our broken relationship with God).

And this love saves us (from God’s wrath).

The cross is the great fixed, immovable declaration of God’s love for you in a hopeless place. God loves YOU. You can believe this and base your life on this.

And if God gave his Son for you when you were at your worst, what circumstances could ever make him stop loving you?
