Kesha - Your love is my drug

We come up with an alternative, but less catchy title for Kesha's new song...

Kesha has a song. It’s a little catchy. There’s a small possibility I may have found myself singing along to it in the car.

‘What you’ve got boy is hard to find
Think about it all about it all the time
I’m all strung up my heart is fried
I just can’t get you off my mind

Because your love, your love, your love, is my drug’

The vibe of it is that she is obsessed with a guy and can’t stop thinking about him. It’s like a magnet that pulls her closer to him. This feeling is addictive and she can’t get enough of it. It affects her feelings, her thoughts, her judgement and even leads to her being a ‘love-sick crackhead.’

Kesha is saying that love is the feeling of being obsessed with someone.

Is it?

Plenty of modern day expressions would say the same thing. How often do you hear the expression ‘in love’ or ‘head over heels in love’?

The definition of love is something else. It’s actually defined by an action. God is love and he is love because of his action of sending his innocent son to be executed in a humiliating way to save the guilty people of the earth. The way God defines love is to care for and to sacrifice for others, even when there is nothing attractive about them, or nothing about them that he wants or needs.

So if love is sacrificing for someone, what is the ‘can’t get you off my mind’ feeling that Kesha is singing about?

It’s probably more about attraction and lust - self-seeking rather than other-person centred. Of course, that makes for a less catchy lyric:

‘You’re unique attractiveness that is self-seeking is my drug.’

Don’t be deceived. We need to be careful we don’t think of love as just a feeling. For we’ll then fail to love others the way God intended us to.
