Four Christmas songs that are all about Jesus
Focus on Jesus with these catchy tunes.
Christmas is a season full of music! As your family opens presents, enjoys Christmas lunch and snoozes in the afternoon, it’s likely there will be a Christmas CD playing in the background. But what are the songs about?
Are they about snow? Are they about Santa? Are they about Christmas trees and lights? Or… are they about Jesus?
Around Christmas I like to listen to Christmas carols and songs about Jesus to remind me what Christmas is actually about. So check out these four Christmas songs this year and remind yourself how special this season is… because Jesus was born to die for you! Some are classics and some are newer but they’re all focused on Christ.
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
It’s a classic for a reason! It focuses on the song the angels may have sung to the shepherds in the field on the night of Christ’s birth. This song is full of names for Jesus including King, Prince of Peace, Emmanuel and Son of Righteousness. Plus the whole song references not just Christ’s birth, but what he was born to do! If you want to listen to this song, I love the awesome version that the Pentatonix have done of this song.
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Mary, Did You Know?
This song is less well known but no less wonderful! It speaks to Mary, mother of Jesus, asking if she knows what her son will grow up to do. There are references to the miracles that Jesus will perform, and the fact that he will save people from their sins. Such a wonderful reminder that the baby in the manger is going to be a powerful king!
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
The sleeping Child you're holding is the great "I am"
Come One and All
Australian band Garage Hymnal composed this song in 2013 and it has become one of my favourites for Christmas. It’s peaceful and joyful and urges all to come and worship the newborn king. Plus there is a beautiful animated video you can watch as you listen that reminds you of the Christmas story.
More lovely than the angels
Than the stars, this holy child!
Lying here before us, sent here for us
Jesus Christ!
We Have a Saviour
Hillsong Worship wrote this song and it’s a lovely, simple reminder that the birth of Jesus - well, THIS is Christmas! Not Santa or gifts or food or elves or candy canes or Christmas trees. Jesus, our saviour, born to die for us. You can find a video of this song right here on Fervr!
Jesus, Emmanuel here with us
Tell all the world
We have a Saviour
We have a Savior
We are no longer lost
'Cause He has come down for us
We have a Saviour
We have a Savior
