Does Kanye West believe Jesus is king?

Is it really possible that Kanye West has become a Bible-believing Christian?

The Bible is full of stories about incredible transformations that happened in people's lives because of Jesus.

Greedy and dishonest tax collectors suddenly giving away their money... timid disciples becoming powerful evangelists... and one of Christianity's most fierce early opponents becoming its primary spokesperson.

We know Jesus changes lives.

But a foul-mouthed, self-obsessed rapper becoming a gospel-believing, church-going, humble servant of the King of Kings?

Is it really possible?

Yep. Sure is.

With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible – Matthew 19:26

Going to church with Kanye West

Kanye West's new album 'Jesus Is King' has received mixed reviews online with critics praising West's musical production, but many unsure what to make of his transition to singing pretty much non-stop about God.

But if Kanye has truly come to have his eyes opened by God's Spirit, then his obsession with telling others about it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's read their Bible... which Kanye has been doing a lot of recently.

Plus he's been going to church quite a bit too.

"Kanye started visiting our church back in mid-May," says Adam Tyson from Placerita Bible Church, 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

"He asked me to help him to learn more about God from the Bible so, I started a Bible study with him and others in Calabasas in August."

"I would teach from God's Word about how salvation is only by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone."

"In addition to leading a Bible study, we have had lots of conversations about how to love God, love others, walk in holiness, as well as working on the new album 'Jesus is King,'" Tyson said.

Kanye West and Sunday Service

Tyson has been a regular speaker at Kanye's live 'Sunday Service' events too, and says Kanye's goal with the services is sharing the love of Christ with whoever is willing to hear.

"Sunday Service is about a God-exalting testimony, Christ-centered preaching, and Spirit-filled worship that points people to the goodness and greatness of God. We want America and the world to see the love of God through Jesus Christ."

What does Tyson speak about at Sunday Service?

"My message is that God is holy, but we are all sinners and therefore deserve God’s judgment. God loves the world so much that He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and was raised from the dead on the third day. The good news is that through repentance of your sin and faith in the risen Christ you can have true joy and happiness which is found only in Jesus."

How should we respond to Kanye?

Whenever Jesus works so dramatically in someone's life, like he did with the tax collectors, disciples and the Apostle Paul, it's natural to feel a little skeptical.

But it does look like Kanye West is genuine about his commitment to Jesus. Which is awesome for him!

And in response, I think there's three things we should do:

  1. Praise God that Kanye has come to understand that Jesus died for Him and accepted him as his Lord and Saviour
  2. Pray that Kanye's new faith will be protected from the 'thorns' of Matthew 13, which refers to "someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful."
  3. Pray that many more people will come to know that Jesus Is King as they hear Kanye's album and start investigating the truth of Christianity for themselves
