Wrestling with Jesus

First 'The Rock', then 'The Undertaker', now meet 'The Gate'!

If you’re looking for top dancers, a soap opera with outrageous story lines, and characters with oversized egos, I recommend WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). I promise you won’t be disappointed. It has it all!

Now you have to believe me when I say I’m not a fan of wrestling (honest I’m not!) but after coming across the WWE website I had the feeling (the scary sick kinda feeling) that I could be a fan if I wasn’t careful!

It’s all so outrageous and fake that it’s strangely captivating!

But the best bit for me are the wrestlers themselves. Their names are brilliantly bad aren’t they?

There's Triple H, Hulk Hogan, and Big Daddy. But even better sounding are The Hurricane, The Rock, and The Undertaker.

If we read the book of John in the Bible we find that Jesus also gives himself a nickname. Listen to what he says as he grabs the mic!

“I am the gate” (John 10v9)

The gate? Not exactly an inspiring name is it? I don’t think that Jesus' nickname would do much for the WWE circuit. What’s Jesus on about?

Well perhaps we’ll find out, cos he goes on to say “I am the gate; anyone who goes through me will be saved.”

Jesus is claiming to be the source of rescue and safety for people. But does he live up to it?

If you’ve ever seen the actual action of wrestling rather than the hype surrounding it, you soon realise that it’s all pretty pathetic. The scary names and the spectacular special moves are not all that they’re cracked up to be. It’s all a show, nothing’s real. The Wrestler's claims seem impressive but they don’t live up to it.

Jesus on the other hand - his claims of what he can do are nothing short of outrageous!

“anyone who goes through me will be saved”.

Jesus says we are the sheep and he is the gate to safety, the only way to be saved is to go through him.

‘The gate’ is a name you wouldn’t look at twice…but Jesus claiming to be the only way to be saved (to have a secure future beyond death) isn’t like with the fake claims of the pro wrestler, because he’s actually someone who is who he says he is, and he’s someone who can do what he says he’ll do.

Now that’s impressive!
