Start something new today

As the seasons turn, is God calling you to make some changes in your life?

We've just entered a new season in the calendar. 

For me, that's often a good time to reevaluate my life, to think through if there are any old things I need to replace with something new.

It could be new habits, new attitudes, new motivation, or new ideas.

Throw out the old

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,     whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

Sometimes, our thoughts can be anything but those qualities listed above, and that means there's probably something old that needs to be replaced.

That jealousy I'm holding onto? It’s just not admirable, and it's time to let it go. That anger that keeps festering? That’s not lovely, and it's time to not hold onto it anymore.

But letting go of old things is only half the battle. We then need to replace those old habits with new, good ones.

Start something new

“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23a).

If you've let go of old habits or old ways of thinking, then ask for God's help to live the new life he wants for you, filled with the fruit of the Spirit.

Then make the decision every day to step forward into that life God wants for you.

Here's an example of some actions you could take if you're wanting to let go of jealousy and replace it with kindness and goodness.

  • When that jealousy is flaring, recognise it for what it is and choose to reject it.
  • Instead, choose to honor God, and remember that God wants you to be a person of kindness and goodness.
  • If your jealousy of another person would usually lead you to curse them, then make the choice to pray for them instead.

This new season, let's be people who throw out our old ways and live the new lives God made us for!
