So you want to be a star…

What does God say to people who want to be famous?

When you think about being a ‘star’, what comes to mind?

  • Do you think about fame, fortune, or popularity?
  • Do you have dreams of landing a job that will allow you to become a millionaire by the time you are 30?
  • Do you obsess over your looks, hoping that someday someone will take notice of you and want to put you on the cover of a magazine?

What is it that, if only you could obtain it, would get you closer to being a ‘star’?

Face it. If you are like most people, you have had thoughts about what it would be like to obtain celebrity status. Maybe you picture yourself standing on a red carpet or accepting a Grammy or an Oscar someday. Or maybe you see yourself getting drafted for the NFL or NBA, and have the desire to do whatever it takes to get there.

Do you want to be a star?

Why do we want to be stars? Are today’s stars in our society (the ones who drive the big cars and attend the high end parties) the happiest people? Are they living truly satisfied, godly lives?

Although there may be a few actors and sportspeople who are living a life pleasing to God, how many times do we hear about ‘stars gone wild’ or ‘child actors gone bad’?

Can you even recall all of the stars who have had to go to jail for drinking and driving?

How many would you say have struggled with eating disorders or have committed adultery, ending in divorce? Too many to count, right?

If all this is going on, then why are we so eager to put these people on pedestals and look to them to set an example for us?

Being one of God's stars

It’s easy getting caught up in wanting to be a ‘star’. The truth is, the world presents us with so many things that appear to be what we want and need, and we can forget who we are living for and why we are here.

But you want to know something? God is not against us wanting to be ‘stars’? Did you catch that? In fact, He has designed us to be ‘stars’ that shine bright for Him. As Christians, we have been called to be set apart. Philippians 2:14-15 says,

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation.

This scripture reminds us that this world and the people in it are broken.

Society is in need of Christians to take a stand and light the way of truth with our words and actions. We are to refrain from conforming to our society’s standards and patterns. Instead we are to run after whatever pleases God (Rom. 12:1-2).

Being a ‘star’ for God is not as simple as it sounds. It can, in all truth, be very difficult at times. However, despite the difficulty of the journey, being  ‘stars’ means that we must continuously find satisfaction in the Ultimate Light, for He is the One who replenishes the light within us.
