He invented the future and led us there

The phrase was used to describe Steve Jobs, but really describes Jesus.

The legacy of Steve Jobs

“He invented the future and led us there” was the title of a news piece I recently read on Steve Jobs. And there is a lot of truth to the statement.

That is what Steve Jobs gave us: the future.

Jobs invented the MacBook, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. He put the future into the palms of our collective hands. And many people got a taste for the future, and then hungered for more. Every time a new product was about to be released, people queued up for more.

Jesus shows us the future

When you read the accounts of Jesus, in his biographies written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you discover that Jesus did a similar thing to Steve Job. For Jesus gave us a glimpse into the future. Every healing, whether giving sight to the blind, restoring a withered hand, strengthening crippled legs, or raising the dead to life, was Jesus bringing the future Kingdom of God into the present. They were a taste of things to come, and people hungered for more. Jesus “invented” a new way of living, in complete love and obedience to God His Father, which amazed and astonished the crowds, many of whom queued up for more.

Jesus leads us to the future

After showing us the future, Jesus died, to” lead us there”. John’s biography puts it this way.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:1-4).

With the coming of Jesus, the future burst into the present. But Jesus also had to go to prepare the future for us. And he promises to come back again to lead us there.

If you want to know what the future holds, and what your future holds, grab an iPhone with a Bible app on it. Or just grab a Bible. And see the future that invaded the present with the coming of Jesus. And hunger for the future, trusting that Jesus will lead us there.
