Don’t you worry, child!

As we grow up, childhood ideals can be shattered. Where do we turn when life gets stressful?

Don’t You Worry Child is a pumping, pulsating song from Swedish House Mafia. The music video features footage recorded at their final UK performance on the 14th July 2012 at the National Bowl, Milton Keynes. As of today, the video has over 670 million views on YouTube! The tune jumps into your brain and bounces around in there forever.

But have you stopped to think about the words? The song starts with the songwriter looking back to a “happy” time when, as a young boy, he was “king” on the world, on a “golden throne”.

Childhoods can often be like that. You are young, safe, secure, loved, carefree and happy. Remember?

However, for the songwriter, “those days are gone”, things have “all changed”. For his heart has been broken by his first love. And in the despair, he finds comfort in his fathers’ words, “Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you.”

Childhood dreams are often broken

The songwriter's experience is one we can all relate to. The older we get, the more we live, the more likely we are to have our hearts broken, dreams shattered and relationships strained.

What do you do when these realities bite you? Where do you turn for comfort? Is it to a childhood memory, some words of wisdom from a parent or friend?

For Christians, the line “Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you” has a deeper, more profound meaning than the Swedish House Mafia realize. For we have a heavenly father, the true King of the world, who invites us to come to him with all our worries and concerns

Don’t you worry child

Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

God, our Father, tells us not to worry, but to pray. Tell God your worries and let Him give you his peace.

And not only do we have a Father who wants to swap our worries for his peace, we also have a Father who has a plan for you

God’s plan for you

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. (Romans 8:28-30)

It’s not just that “heaven” has a plan for you (whatever that actually means). It is that God has a plan for you. God’s plan for you is to change you into being more and more like Jesus. And God can even use the heartbreaks and heartaches of life to make that happen.

So the next time your heart is broken, your dreams shattered or relationships strained, remember two things;

2. Trust God has a plan for your life
