The god of fashion

Can clothes really give you value and worth?

"O Fashion, O great redeemer
Save us from our misery
Heal our brokenness
Take away our loneliness
Extinguish our ugliness
Give us value and worth
That we may feel beautiful
And all our problems will disappear
You are our saviour and god
And we will purchase you all of our days.”

You’ve probably never said these words out loud or even consciously. But as they say, actions speak louder than words. Have your actions ever shown that you believed these words?

Idolatry is putting something in the place of God

It can be anything. Fashion. Sex. Love. Money. Achievement. Football. One Direction. Whatever. Anything you put as the number 1 in your life. It can be anything you worship. But it can also be anything you look towards to give you complete value, worth, satisfaction, joy or salvation from your problems.

We need God as number 1

God describes idolatry this way:

My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. (Jeremiah 2:13)

People need water. God uses this image to show that we need Him. He says you can come to Him, the spring of living water, and get all the good water you need. Or you can dig your own hole in the ground. Which will never give you enough, and it will be dirty. Only God can give us what we need. Anything else in His place will be a poor, broken and inadequate replacement.

Is fashion your god?

Are you trying to get something from fashion that only Jesus can give?

Are you using fashion to try and make yourself feel valuable? Or looking to the infinite value Jesus has given you?
Are you using fashion in hope that it will take away your loneliness? Or looking to the infinite love Jesus has for you?

Fashion is a poor god. Jesus is infinitely better.

"Jesus, O Great Redeemer
Save us from our eternal misery
Heal our brokenness
Take away our loneliness
Extinguish our ugliness
You have given us value and worth
Now we are beautiful in your eyes
And all our sin will disappear
You are our Saviour and God
And we will worship you all of our days."
