Unconditionally

Katy Perry's new single reminds us of the everlasting love of God.

When I first heard Katy Perry’s new song Unconditionally, I was blown away by how much it made me think of Christ's love for us. While I’m not sure this was intended, it’s still nice to know people are hearing about such a great kind of love, and here’s hoping they find that in Christ!

Katy opens up her song with the lines “…did I almost see what’s really on the inside? All your insecurities, all the dirty laundry, never made me blink an eye.” And in spite of seeing all this, she says she will love this person unconditionally. “I will love you unconditionally. There is no fear now. Let go and just be free. I will love you unconditionally.”

She then exclaims, “open up your heart and just let it begin” and that “acceptance is the key to be truly free”

God's love is unconditional

What Katy sings about is a great reminder of how God loves us! God’s love for us is unconditional. This means it requires no merit, limits or anything to gain or lose it. God loves us because of who He is, not because of who we are or what we have done. We can’t earn God's love, but He chooses to love us anyway.

God knows how bad we really are. We are all sinful and blemished, and a holy God cannot be in the presence of evil sinners. And this is why God is so amazing. He sees our sins and all the bad stuff we do. He knows how we constantly reject Him and do our own thing, but He chooses to love us despite all of this. This is truly unconditional love.

Romans 3:10-12 says “there is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away” and verse 23 goes on to say, “for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”

And this is why Jesus’ sacrifice for us is so important. We were stuck in our sin, but Jesus made us clean in God’s sight by his pure and untainted blood. And now we can enjoy a relationship with God. As it says in Romans, “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rm. 5:2).

Do you know His love?

For those who trust in Him, God's love will never end! In Romans 8:38-39 Paul states, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

In John 10:10, Jesus says He has come to give us life, and life to the full. That is, we are not going to be missing out on anything. Jesus has the best plan for us, and wants to saturate us in His love and blessings. John 3:16 makes that great promise, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God loves us without end, and this is not something we have earned. We aren’t ‘good enough’ to be loved by God, but that’s the beauty of grace – God loving us although we don’t deserve it. As Katy Perry so rightfully expresses, an open heart and acceptance is freeing!

So in light of being loved unconditionally, how are you going to respond? Will you accept God's love for you today?
