That’s my boy: movie review

If you're looking for a great movie to watch this week, this really isn't it.

Adam Sandler’s latest film, That’s My Boy reminds me of Hugh Grant’s Music and Lyrics with a little bit of American Pie and The Hangover thrown in for good measure. The film starts off showing how a young Donny gets involved in a teenage pregnancy with a twist. The rest of the movie is a whirlwind of badly cut scenes with slapstick comedy peppered with crudeness. There is swearing in the majority of the scenes; not to mention distasteful sexual content and/or references.

The film is a sad reminder of the sort of values that society has deemed acceptable in our lifetime. There is no doubt that films have always been representative of the culture of the time.

Back in the old days of Cinema, Casablanca and The Sound Of Music showed us that love can be found even amongst war. A Hard Day’s Night showcased life in the 60s with the Beatles. Fast forward to 2012, we have films like That’s My Boy representing what is fast becoming commonplace in our generation - careless living, alcohol abuse, and countless unmentionables which the film introduces us to.

To me, there was no positive takeaway from the film at all. The careless living juxtaposed by middle class America’s greed represented in the movie forces the viewer to take sides – both which are not standards of living which any Christian should aspire to.

If you are serious about making a stand on your faith, this movie definitely falls into the “non-beneficial”  things Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 6:12. On top of that, most of the mainstream press have also said it is a disaster of a movie. There are many more films and modes of entertainment which are much more beneficial out there – spend time on those. Give this one a miss.
