If I were a boy

Beyonce Knowles thinks that if she were a boy, she might do things differently.

Beyonce’s new single “If I Were a Boy” is one of the first singles from her yet to be released album “I Am… Sasha Fierce”. Rumour has it that Timbaland is producing the record and the tracks tie in heavily with her upcoming movie, Cadillac Records.

I must confess, I found myself strangely bopping my foot to this tune. As always, these  RnB superstars get the best producers and deliver a tasty product. It’s instantly catchy when you hear it on the radio.

It’s one of those songs that makes it pretty clear what she’s on about… the song is about what she would be like if she were a boy. Beyonce reckons she’d “drink beer with the guys and chase after girls”. And in the process, like boys do, she (er, he) would also take those girls for granted and end up stuffing up those relationships big time.

It’s a pretty bleak picture of men! Never confronting each other, never growing up and taking responsibility, able to use and abuse girls for their own pleasure ... ouch! And they do all this for the simple reason that they can get away with it.

Do you think Beyonce is right? Girls—do your guy friends behave so selfishly? Boys—do you let your friends behave like this without questioning them?

It’s interesting to think about how all this is different to the Bible’s picture of how men should behave. We are to “treat older women as mothers…younger women as sisters, with absolute purity” (1 Timothy chapter 5, verse 2). And if you’re married…wow… “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians chapter 5, verse 25). Remember, Christ gave his life for the church. That’s a radically different way of treating women. Do you think you’re up to it?
