The piece of fish that changed everything

Jesus' disciples were unconvinced by the resurrection... until he asked for some food.

There was a moment in history when a fish finger changed the world as we know it.

This event, involving a fish finger (you might call it a fish stick), was so significant that it changed the course of human history. Aren’t you just a little intrigued as to what this fishy occurrence might be?

After all, it’s quite a claim for anything to change the world isn’t it? So for the humble and often over-looked fish finger to be credited with such importance seems, at best, a little strange.

Let me set the scene for you.

After the crucifixion

Jesus had been crucified and his followers were in a state of shock, grief and despair.

What now of all the claims he made about himself? He had claimed to be God in human form, the promised rescuer, the only way to God the Father.

What now of all the promises he had made to them? Promises of a life after death, a life without the sadness and suffering of this world and a life with him forever.

Luke 24v36, "...Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost."

When the recently crucified Jesus turns up to their grief-filled gathering you can totally understand their reaction. Startled and frightened. “It can’t be him. Are our eyes tricking us?”

But this is no apparition or goulish display, it really is Jesus.

The unbelievable occurs

Luke's account continues... "He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet."

Jesus is back from the dead!

It’s hard to stomach though isn’t it? It’s hard to believe that someone can be alive after dying. “It just doesn’t happen”.

The disciples felt the same way. “It can’t be true. He can’t really be alive again”.

So Jesus allows them to look at him closely, see the hands and the feet that had so recently been nailed to a cross. He invites them to grab hold of him and see that he is physically there with them.

But it seems even that wasn’t enough for them!

The fish finger that changed everything

And so, we read on ... "And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

‘They still did not believe it’, it was just too good to be true.

Enter the fish finger! This is the moment. The moment that a fish finger changed everything.

"They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence." (ok, it wasn't a fish finger exactly, but pretty close!).

As Jesus swallowed that fish finger, suddenly the idea of of him being alive again was easier to swallow too.

Suddenly, when that simple act of eating was witnessed by his followers, all that Jesus had said about himself, all that he had promised to them about life forever with him became believable.

What this means for you and me

I don’t know what you think when you see a fish finger. But I’m pretty sure that when whenever Jesus’ followers ate fish from that moment on that they would recall with great excitement the moment that they were convinced that Jesus was really alive again.

There was a moment in history when a fish finger changed the world as we know it.

This event, involving a fish finger, was so significant that it changed the course of human history.

If you’re sceptical about Jesus' resurrection, you’re not the first and you won’t be the last. It’s pretty natural to doubt something so outrageous. That’s why the simple act of Jesus eating a fish finger was recorded and preserved for us. So that we might know for certain that it truly happened (if you're still unsure, check out some of our related articles below).

Will that fish finger change your world?

Will that fish finger change the course of your life?
