Our God is so big…

There's nothing our God cannot do

Well done Jessica Watson for sailing around the world solo.

Gutsy effort that. Hard to imagine being at sea for around 7 months. She may not have got seasick, but she would have definitely got sick of seeing the sea. It’s a long way around. Over 20,000 nautical miles (I don’t really know what a nautical mile is, but it sounds like a long way.)

When you think about what Jessica did, it kind of reminds us that the world is a pretty big place. And most of the earth actually consists of water. About 70% of the earth consists of water. The total water supply of the world is 1.400.000.000 km3. (a m3 of water equals 1,000 litres – ah, you gotta love the internet!).

With all that in mind check out Isaiah 40:12;

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?”

The answer that Isaiah is fishing for (if you pardon the pun) is “Nobody…, except God that is”. Yes, the world is big. Yes, some of our achievements on planet Earth are big (go Jessica). But when it comes to really, really impressive, mind-blowing BIGNESS, God wins hands down. He is so big that he can hold all 1.400.000.000 km3 in the hollow of his hand.

“So what?”, you might ask. “So everything”, I would reply.  This is the God of the universe and he deserves to be loved and respected above everything and everyone else. Too often we have a too small view of God. Too often we have a too big view of ourselves. Too often we think we are the most important person in the world. Too often we forget that God made the world for His glory.

This is why Jesus came to planet earth, to rescue us from drowning in our short sightedness, selfishness and sinfulness. He came to give a spring of living water that wells up to eternal life (John 4:13-14).

So don’t buy the “watered down” picture of God. The God of the universe is big and he deserves to be loved and respected above everything and everyone else.
