Why I don’t believe in coincidences anymore.

I've completely dropped this word from my vocabulary - here's why.

“What a coincidence!”

It’s a phrase that I’ve completely dropped out of my vocabulary because my understanding of God and His word has lead me to believe there is no such thing.

You might think I’m crazy – but hear me out.

God is in control of everything

The reason I’ve dropped it out of the things I say all comes back to one of the largest overarching themes in the Bible – God’s sovereignty.

God’s sovereignty is a concept that refers to the fact that God is ALWAYS in control of everything that happens. Check out this verse where God is speaking about His will being done:

“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’ (Isaiah 46:10)

Here God is speaking saying that whatever He wills to happen will come to be, and because He is God with unlimited power and authority over the universe He created, it WILL happen.

Want some more Bible-based evidence that everything is under God's sovereign control? Check these verses out...

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. - Proverbs 16:9 ESV

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. -Proverbs 19:21 ESV

Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? —Lamentations 3:37 ESV

Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps. —Psalms 135:6

So there’s my reasoning – God is in control and makes everything happen. Therefore I cannot say that something is a “coincidence”, because nothing happens by random chance.

So what do I say now?

Well I’ve started calling those seemingly random times when things come together “God-incidences”, because God has set it up to happen like that, He has made it happen with his ultimate control over our world.

So what do you think? Could reading this article really be a “coincidence” for you – or maybe just maybe it is a “God-incidence”. Start looking out for more God-incidences in your life today!
