What should I do when I leave school?
I'm not sure it really matters that much...
Just this week, Australian Employment Minister, Mark Arbib said Gen Y needs to be less choosy about what they do when they leave school.
Mr Arbib said "I'm not saying we should tell young people not to dream and strive and have ambition - society thrives on that,", but "in the current climate" there are less jobs around, and the 'perfect' job may not even exist.
But what about you? Have you got big dreams for your future? What job do you think God wants you to do? Do you think God wants you to be a plumber, a painter or a professor?
Well in some ways, I don't think it really matters that much to God. Sure, you need to think about your future, but in reality God is much more concerned with WHO you are after you leave school, not WHAT you do.
In fact, the Bible rarely talks about WHAT you should do. What I mean is, it doesn't say much about what career people should go in to, and there may be no clear signs that you should take one job or career over another (hey, you're Gen Y - you'll have about 10 careers anyway).
However, the Bible is very concerned with WHO you are. That is, no matter what you do, God wants you to become a certain type of person. He wants you to become like Jesus, he wants you to love other people, and he wants you to be humble, honest, loving, and growing in your relationship with him daily.
Paul sums up this idea nicely in Colossians 3:23 - "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men."
What are you going to do when you leave school? A good answer might be "I'm going to live for Jesus".
